With a part of the institute housing Covid care facilities, the IIT Guwahati finally decided to hold its convocation ceremony online after a delay of almost two months. Prime Minister Modi will be addressing the students as the chief guest on the occasion. Union education minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ and minister of state for education Sanjay Dhotre will be the guests of honour. Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal will also be present during the ceremony.
Rajiv I Modi, chairman of the board of governors at IIT Guwahati and TG Sitharam, director of the institute, will be addressing the gathering during the event.
“For the convocation, to celebrate the graduates’ accomplishments online through virtual mode, the Institute has created a virtual reality-based award distribution where one can experience an avatar of the recipient of the award collecting a medal from the director’s own avatar surrogating him, from the comfort of their home. The Institute has also created a photo-booth, with an option of different backgrounds, for students to take pictures at some selected locations on the campus. IIT Guwahati’sfaculty and students have developed a telepresencemodule for a virtual visit to the Institute,” IIT Guwahati’s statement on Friday read.
